About Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek

Around Dhaulagiri trek is a challenging trek around the Dhaulagiri massif (8167m), the seventh highest mountain in the world, which involves snow and glacier walking. This is the perfect trip for those who want a more intense experience of the mountains. Dhaulagiri lies northwest of Pokhara culminating at its highest point at the eastern end, Dhaulagiri is almost unique in the world in terms of its rise above local terrain where it rises to 7000m over the Kali Gandaki gorge to the southeast in about 30 km of aerial distance. In fact, Kali Gandaki is dramatic as two eight thou-senders, Annapurna I, and Dhaulagiri both stand near the river facing each other over a deep valley. From 1808 to 1848, Dhaulagiri was thought to be the tallest mountain.

The words "Dhaula" and "Giri" in Sanskrit, an old Hindu dialect, respectively, signify "White" and "Mountain." Although climbs have been made from many directions, the northeast ridge was followed for the most of the ascent to this "White Mountain." There were 358 successful summits in 2007 and 58 fatalities, for a fatality rate of 16.2%.

Around Dhaulagiri trekking begins from Beni, trail passes through cultivated land connected with mountain villages and explores the lifestyle of Gurung, Chhetri, and Magar people. Following the Myagdi Khola westwards to Darbang and turn north on a tiny trail that leads through forests into the high country. You will cross two high passes, the French Pass (5360) and Hidden Valley (5200m) providing more spectacular views of Dhaulagiri, Thorong, Annapurna peaks and Kali Gandaki River (the world's deepest gorge). The Dhaulagiri circuit trek offers breathtaking views of the Dhaulagiri range and many other mountains. Geographically, the Dhaulagiri region is a land of dramatic contrast. Dhaulagiri is separated from the Annapurna region by the world's deepest Kali Gandaki.

To go to Dhaulagiri Base Camp, we hike through Darbang, Takum, Muri, Bhogara, Doan, and Italian Base Camp. We proceed farther, walking through a steep trail with many high passes (including the French Pass and Thapa Pass), via the Hidden Valley, Yak Kharka, Muktinath, Jomsom, Pokhara, and Kathmandu.

Trek Difficuly of Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek / Dhaulagiri Base Camp

Dhaulagiri Trek is regarded as one of the most difficult high-altitude treks in Nepal. Trekkers must traverse passes that are more than 5,000 meters high and spend days traveling along the secluded high altitude trail. A significant issue on the Dhaulagiri Circuit path is altitude. Above Italian Base Camp, the infrastructure for tourism is practically nonexistent. It is quite difficult to identify the correct trail due to the confusing one that is frequently covered in snow.

Accommodation During Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek includes both tented camp and teahouse accommodations. The villages have not been affected by major tourism, therefore there are simple teahouses with few amenities. However, the lodging is spotless and provides a comfortable bed for the night. For added comfort, it is best to bring a sleeping bag liner.

Foods During Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek

Typical Nepali food is served at rest stops along the path. There isn't a wide variety of food available; it is best to get your preferred munchies in Pokhara or Kathmandu. During this path, a local tea shop offers stable nourishment in the form of daal bhaat.
You need to drink plenty of water, and Daal Bhaat and Tarkari are packed with healthy calories that will keep you satisfied for hours.
All of the meals are prepared before the camping expedition begins. You can ask a skilled cook to prepare your preferred dish.

Dhaulagiri Circuit  / Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek Required Permit

Every trekker in Nepal must use TIMS (Trekker's Information Management System). (Each hike cost USD $20 per person.)
-Entry Permit for the Annapurna Conservation Area Project
(The trek cost USD $30 per person.)
